Living a vital life means being in a state of optimum health – of glowing, thriving, being full of energy, vibrancy and power – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Vitality feels amazing and is magnetic: it attracts people to you and they desire what you have.
Vitality is a reflection of the essence of life in its purest and most potent form. It has a powerful and exciting energy to it.
I believe living a life of vitality is what the experience of life should be.
Creating the LLiV brand
When I was creating the LLiV brand, I wanted something that reflected this highly energized state, and which would inspire people to pursue it. I also wanted it to be solidly grounded in science… For the tips and tools we provide to be effective and work, and be credible to the skeptics who need the scientific rationale to buy-in.
Epigenetics was the link. It’s the science behind everything I instinctively felt was true.
Epigenetics proves that everything you consume, every breath you take and how you take it, how you exercise, every thought you think, your state of happiness and how you interact with the world influences your state of health.
It moves away from the medical paradigm to treat the symptoms, and focuses on the causes of disease and wellbeing.
So What is Epigenetics?
Very simply epigenetics states that we influence our own state of health… that lifestyle – in its broadest definition – is what determines whether we are healthy, vital and disease free, or not.
Since DNA was formally identified in the 1950’s, the belief was that our genes determined not only our eye colour and features, but also our health. If you had the gene for breast cancer, for example, the medical world considered it a case of ‘when’ you would get it, not ‘if’. Family history carried as much (or maybe more) weight on patient surveys than lifestyle.
The view was that our DNA decided our future health.
Epigenetics has proven this not to be the case. Epigenetics has shown that it’s the environment created within our bodies that influences whether these genes are switched on or left dormant. Our genes are not the ticking time bombs they were thought to be, but rather we influence their activation through our own behavior.
Epigenetics Shows How You Create Your Own Health
Think of your body as a chemistry lab where your thoughts and actions create the reactions and produce new chemicals. Your cells and the DNA within them are swimming in the environment of this chemical production.
In one environment the cells and their component parts behave in one way. In another environment, they behave in a different manner altogether.
So your job is to influence the environment within your own body as positively as you can.
What you put in to your body through what you eat, drink, consume, or absorb; what you put in to your mind through the information you consume, the people you interact with and the thoughts you think; the quality and duration of your sleep; the air you breathe and how you breathe it; your relationships; your mentality; your emotions… They all create the chemistry in your body that in turn influence the behavior of your body’s cells and whether they live, die, mutate or replicate.
For some people this concept is scary because it requires responsibility to be taken, and responsibility requires effort and ownership. For others it is hugely empowering – it puts us in greater control of our health and makes vitality a real possibility and choice.
The knowledge of epigenetics puts us in the driving seat of our own health, and allows us to be ‘at cause’ of our wellbeing.
